Welcome to the Clary Photo Blog!

Hi! I'm Clary, based out of the beautiful meadows of the Midwest and the fortunate photographer of the deeply, connectively, head-over-heels, crazy in love people you will enjoy during your visit.

I hope you find something exciting and explore the links at the top, they will take you to all the places you need to go!
but you can't take the meadows of the Midwest out of the girl.

1 Chicago engagement photographer clary pfeiffer.jpg2 Chicago engagement photographer clary pfeiffer.jpgA small peek into an engagement session from Chicago. The first is so breathtaking and peaceful. And yes, in the middle of Chicago I find a meadow tucked in the beautiful sky-rises of the city for Caroline and Chris' engagement session. What can I say, I'm a rebel:)

Now lets discuss the fact that ClaryPhoto has traveled Planes, Trains and Automobiles (seriously we traveled by all three) this past month to photograph amazing people in Milwaukee, Cape Cod and Chicago. It was quite the adventure and there is so much to show you from these weddings and sessions I can hardly stand it. But I'm super excited to be home!! This week two awesome events take place around here, the very exciting St. Louis Shoot Party and our 5 year old son starting Kindergarten.

Hughes is starting Kindergarten. Wow. Can you believe it?!!

If you're there on Wednesday, say hi if I've never met and to everyone I do know...give me a big hug and be nice on the questions;)

Okay, this is going to be super lame, but I'm going to admit it anyway! us. My favorite summer song right now is "Jack and Diane" by John Mellencamp. My little guy's name is Jack and my mom's name is Diane. She decided that would be "their" song (with some lyrical changes in it...it's not quite appropriate as is). My favorite line includes "Diane's Jackie's Maw Maw, sitting at the bar." Yup, that is definitely more appropriate! But, we sing that song all the time and Jack dances around and laughs every time. There is nothing better than that laugh!

(07.10.10 @ 01:15 PM)
Andrea H. says:

That is a great question! There are so many good ones and I just can't get enough of summer :-)
Hmmm...I guess I would have to say pretty much anything by Bob Marley, because it takes me back to Jamaica, which is one of our favorite places to visit. Everything is so relaxed and "No Problem", which also happens to be the name of my favorite drink we had there. Another good one is Sugar Magnolia by the Grateful Dead, because I'm a "summer love in the spring, fall, and winter."

(07.10.10 @ 02:41 PM)
Kari says:

It's such a lame song, but The Ataris' "Boys of Summer" always reminds me of good summer times. :) I remember one summer driving around to the lakes and fairs and all around the state jamming to that song on the radio. It was played CONSTANTLY.

Other favorite summer memories are:
-taking a big RV with 15 friends to this music festival - Cornerstone. Such a blast.
-many many summers spending time at the lakes -fishing, rocking the raft, paddle boat rides, tubing behind the speedboat, etc.
-movie nights in the park! Love them.

(07.11.10 @ 06:15 PM)
Kari says:

Oh, and I love The National. :) Love love love.

(07.11.10 @ 06:17 PM)
Pamela says:

excellent playlist- you have some of my favorites!

(07.12.10 @ 10:03 AM)
Andi says:

i'll never for get the summer i started driving - ah to be 16 again. and i started driving carpool for a few girls in my class. the first afternoon we drove home i took off the t-tops (do they even make cars with t-tops anymore???) and we blared playin with the boys - by kenny loggins (from top gun). of course every song on that soundtrack was awesome so we would let it the rest of the tape (wow - i'm showing my age!) play on...wind blowing in our hair, best friends in the car, not a care n the world. those were the days!

(07.12.10 @ 11:42 AM)
Polly says:

The song that seems to be stuck in my head most this summer is "In The Sun" from Zooey Deschanel. Don't really know why...it just keeps popping in!!

(07.12.10 @ 11:48 AM)

(07.12.10 @ 11:50 AM)
Kim says:

I know it sounds silly, but "Dancin' In the Streets" reminds me of that summer the Cardinals used it as their theme song, so hearing it makes me think of happy baseball fans in the summer time. And by the way - thanks for everything this weekend - we are so excited to see the proofs!

(07.12.10 @ 12:48 PM)
Kim says:

Whoops. I put "Dancin' in the Streets" when really I meant "The Heat is On" - I guess they are both good summer songs...but upon viewing my late 80's Cardinals t-shirt, I realized I submitted the wrong song!

(07.13.10 @ 12:08 PM)
Ali D. says:

I'd have to say "Summer Breeze". It always makes me imagine lying in a field of jasmine with my love and just soaking up the sun until it sets :)

(07.13.10 @ 05:32 PM)
Rebecca says:

I love summer. I love the heat. I love it all. Recent faves: Better Together – Jack Johnson – Not only was this played at our favorite breakfast spot in Kauai on our honeymoon but now I love singing it to our 7-month old son. Stay (Wasting Time) – Dave Matthews Band – Oh, this just makes me want to lounge on a blanket in the park on a hot day with my man. Oldie but good summer song: Paradise City – Guns and Roses – This is about being 14 and having awesome parents who would take me and my girlfriends to state fairs, carnivals and the like to play. We would cruise the midway testing every ride with the music the carnival workers played blaring in the background, specifically Guns and Roses. I can still feel the wind in my hair, my best friends next to me, going in crazy circles on some ride, laughing hysterically, without a care in the world.

Karin says:

Blue Rocking Chair by Kenny Chesney. The summer we were building our home my husband, son, and I had to live in a camper. Yes, I said LIVE in a camper. Every night when I cooked dinner in the tiny little oven with 2 burners on top, we would put that CD on (because it was stuck in the CD player and all we had to listen to) and open the windows and feel like we were truly alive. I don't even like Kenny Chesney that much - but when I hear that song - I remember that difficult summer in a camper - when my family was closer and happier than ever.

Angie says:

Summer 2005 I was in my third trimester of pregnancy with my first son. I would always have the radio on while I got ready for the day, and at that time, the radio was playing the pussycat dolls--don't cha--over and over again. Three mornings in a row that song was played on the radio, and during its entirety my baby would start moving around/kicking like crazy. Every time I hear that song now it reminds me of that hot summer and feeling baby kicks from inside. :)

It's so exciting when a couple is featured in The Knot. Seeing St. Louis weddings in the pages of a magazine makes me so proud of the beautiful STL. Stephanie and Derek had some awesome details and amazing ceremony with sunlight beaming through the windows under a orchid huppah. AND the dress is my favorite EVER. Check out the link the see what I'm talking about:)

If you've checked out the twitter posts you might have figured out a bit of the news but today I'm happy to announce the full details! Kelly Manno has never been afraid to share her photography knowledge from shooting to the business side. Her openness and love for what she does shows in her latest "St. Louis Photographers Shot Party".

Jasmine star St. Louis photography clary.jpg

Check out the site here and get all of the details.

ps-I fully realize Jasmine Star and myself look like we went shopping together, bought the same dress, then did some head shots. So please don't do a "who wore it better";)

Film is a first love because of the mystery and fun of not knowing what the images looked like until well after it was photographed. For this reason I've started shooting with film when I'm not photographing a wedding or lifestyle session. The results have me dreaming of photographing a wedding with one of these. In the meantime I want to share with you the same fun and excitement that comes from film in this instant, digitalized world. So, I'm giving one of my favorite cameras to one lucky blog commenter. There are a few rules...you must be willing to free yourself from rules (yes, I know this is ironic), embrace random results, disarm your subjects, engage individuality and get your hands dirty. All the rules are detailed here along with links to more about this camera. If you can't follow the above rules or live out of the US (only because of shipping), this camera is not for you so no playing:) To win simply leave a comment in this post with your email address. I'll announce the random winner on Friday morning.

Enjoy these few Holga pictures from our Christmas Tree farm adventure!!

Film is so unbelievably romantic, and yet so rare these days. I have always been drawn to images captured in film, they exude such a beautiful softness. So I figured what better day to share some things with you.

Lots of lists are make in a lifetime...to-do lists, wish lists, shopping lists, Forbes list (just saying) and personsinally 27 things to see, do, be. This list started in high school for an assinigment about 3 dreams. It ws my favorite paper I ever wrote, archived along with my college are history finals. It grew when I graduated high school to 20 and upon graduating college sits proudly at my favorite number 27. I have a list of 27 dreams. Keep in mind, I was a strugling art student working full time, pilling up college loans. I had yet to see the ocean or fly on a plane so I was truly dreaming big.

Last month I checked off one my of my dreams, to drive the Pacific Highway. It was amazing. If you've done this you know, if you haven't do! Along the way I stopped at Crystal Cove and waited for the sun to set. You know there was a soundtrack which you'll lovingly find the link and songs below:)

Before you ask what are my other 26 dreams, well some of them are checked off, like baking the best chocolate chip cookies and living where I can see the stars. A sampling of some fun dreams, photograph the Convent of St. Nickolas, knitting baby outfits for every grandchild, and winning a blue ribbon for a pie recipe.

Now for other awesome happenings in Cali...

Riding bikes around San Fran and over the Golden Gate Bridge, eating at Epic with a Bay Bridge view, visiting SFMOMA, seeing the moon over Napa Valley at Auberge du Soleil, enjoying the sunset at Lauga

One more fun thing of the day of October 27th, Amy and Brent's wedding on Lucky Me:)

I tried that braid thing the other day, and it just didn't work out for me. I don't get it. haha

Gail says:

Okay, I really can't believe (despite you sending me the link) that it took me this long to pour over your playlist on this trip. OMG YOU LOVE CHARLIE MARS TOO?!!!! Darkside is definitely one of my fave songs of the year. I got to see him when he opened for my fave artist, Griffin House, back in February here and have found him adorable ever since.

And having just been in SoCal where I too got to drive down the PCH and see the surfers surfing and the waves crashing and the candy-colored skies and thought, IS THIS REAL?!!! I can TOTALLY see why you have a list of 27 goals with that being one of them ;)

PS - Ironically, Wake Up was playing SO much on the radios out in LA. I think it's funny Arcade Fire has been around forever and suddenly, a movie about a kid named Max comes out with that song attached and everyone's listening ;)

(10.30.09 @ 08:08 AM)
Bianca Valentim says:

awesome playlist!!!!
Thanks for sharing some of your dreams ...
very inspiring! :)

Last week we enjoyed the apple farm with our blackbird fly and favorite Polaroid. The instant film was, well, instant and it's always so much fun to have a picture in a snap...a real live tangible picture. Shooting one roll of b&w and one roll of color, I'm reminded the care, patience and love the whole process takes. After twittering a few pictures from the color roll, Rebecca, described film perfectly, 'romantic'. All the care, patience and love:)

This got me thinking-what if I could shoot a session with all film?

Look at the results, I'm in love the tone of the images.

So, here's the opportunity. I'm wanting to hear what you would like photographed romantically. The winner for my favorite romantic idea receives a film session. Keep in mind this in no way replaces a traditional session, look at this as a session of adventure and romance. This opportunity is restricted to the St. Louis, Kansas City, and Chicago area for winter or early spring, for no more than 2 people...2 kids, 1 celebrating their 27 birthday, a baby, lovebirds enjoying 7 years of marriage or 7 weeks of engagement. It doesn't matter just give me a creative romantic session idea in 27 words or less in the comment section of this blog post. Winner announced Friday, October 16th. I can't wait!!! AND of course, feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts on the film:)

Karin says:

I need photos of myself and my husband/business partner for our website. Romantic? I get to capture other people's romantic/love filled/hopeful days with the person I love more than anything in this world. I'd say that's pretty romantic. It wouldn't matter where or when - just capturing our every day - normal/dorky selves is my idea of romantic.

(10.11.09 @ 11:26 PM)
Karin says:

OK - My dorkyness really just showed because I didn't see the 27 words or less, so the end part is my idea... me and my husband no matter where or when just being our normal/dorky selves. That's my idea of romantic. And the date the winner is announced will be our 5 year wedding anniversary. What an awesome present that would be. No pressure.
And pee ess ess - LOVE the film pics. The are dreamy. And I'm wondering what apple farm that is.

(10.11.09 @ 11:39 PM)
Brit says:

I absolutely love using film! I think the idea of incorporating digital and film is a great concept.

I love the idea of shooting in the home for a newly married couple. It captures the "newness" and the idea of them creating a "home" together.

(10.12.09 @ 12:04 AM)
Brit says:

P.S. The pictures of the kids are fantastic :)

(10.12.09 @ 12:05 AM)
Amanda Zika says:

Karin - you crack me up and you are not a dork!

Clary, I am a hopeless romantic and find this challenge hard :) I would love a romantic session of Brett and I having an old fashioned date eating outside in the middle of nowhere with candles and then going for ice cream later. That is us :) But I would want to look glamorous while soaking in the night. Like 40's glam. Thanks :)

(10.12.09 @ 06:04 AM)
Kim says:

I'd love to have our engagement pictures shot somewhere warm and cozy feeling. The romantic winter pictures would be nice to contrast our future summer wedding pictures.

(10.12.09 @ 08:28 AM)
Liz says:

My parents celebrating 27 years together cozied up to a warm fire with mugs of hot cocoa in their flannel pjs/robes or winter gear.

(10.12.09 @ 09:02 AM)
paula leme says:

clary, i LOOOVE these! (i also love your boots ;)so, can i play too? hehe
ok, my idea of a romantic session: my husband and i, in chicago, walking around the lincoln park area, maybe having some hot chocolate + a white chocolate raspberry cheesecake (our favorite!) the end :)

(10.12.09 @ 09:11 AM)
Amanda S. says:

Whether it's film or digital you always take the most amazing photos! I think a romantic shoot would be to photograph a couple spending a night out from afar. Capturing the moments where they are just being themselves. The touches, the smiles, the kisses in romantic settings like their favorite resturant, taking a walk or carriage ride in the park, or even their home watching their favorite movies, cuddled up in a blanket drinking hot coco. I know I used more than 27 words but I've never been good a summerizing. :)

Clary, these pictures are gorgeous, you really capture people's personalities!
Also, I want to participate in the contest :)
My idea of a romantic evening is cooking a meal with Dave & enjoying our great feast together in the end (along with a nice bottle of wine).

(10.12.09 @ 10:19 AM)
Kristi Perez says:

The film shoot is very romantic. I feel like maybe it looks "soft" too. I love it!
In February, I will be 7 months pregnant with our second child : )
Thats a 2 and a 7...

Erin says:

Cool fall afternoon circa 2002...us= poor college kids: grabbed snacks, radio, warm blanket & each other. Quiet romantic corner in park w/changing leaves watching big clouds roll by …perfect & beautiful.

(10.12.09 @ 10:34 AM)
Kim says:

I can do better than my last entry:
Me. Fiance. Fireplace or firepit. February. Engaged 7 months. Wine or hot chocolate. Snuggling. Laughing. Dancing. In love. Soft. Romantic. Playful. Memorable. Glowing. Smiling. Holding hands. Perfection!

(10.12.09 @ 10:36 AM)
Rachael Schirano says:

Fell hard and fast, whirlwind engagement, five years married, four children...still in love Date night in the city, lights, the contrast of gritty urban with soft romance…

(10.12.09 @ 10:50 AM)
Rachael Schirano says:

i also wanted to add that the images from this session are gorgeous...i have looked at them several times + just love them.

I love these photos! I'd definitely say they are romantic. I love this challenge and here is my entry :)
My husband and I reliving our first date (five years ago this May). Bowling and rootbeer floats on an early spring evening. Relaxed and fun=romantic, right?

(10.12.09 @ 12:02 PM)
Lisa says:

Well...my husband and I are welcoming our first child into the world this January and I think that's pretty romantic. Or at least maternity or newborn photos of it would be :). We're a fun, madly in love couple who can't wait to meet our biggest blessing - little Olivia Marie. Oh, and we live in St. Charles.

(10.12.09 @ 02:04 PM)
Lindsey says:

LOVE this!! Your kids are just so cute, what an adorable foursome you all are! Would love to have a film session! I'll get back to you with my entry :)

(10.12.09 @ 05:10 PM)
LIndsey says:

TWO big "kids", dressed to the nines. Drunk on love, embarrassingly goofy around lots of young students, where we met. Just US, celebrating SEVEN years.

(10.12.09 @ 05:22 PM)
Pamela says:

oh geez! what a challenge.... hmm....

an ice skating session at steinberg! (even though i can't ice skate AT ALL) i think it would be so romantic. cocoa and kisses included.

(10.12.09 @ 07:50 PM)
Ali says:

Idea: 1/27/09, our 7 month wedding anniversary. Sitting in the bed of Beau's 1970 truck that we took to HS dances. Cozying up, looking at stars. The end. But.... to add another number, our 3rd session with the fab Clary :) Beautiful pics and family Clary, you're so talented, so blessed.

(10.12.09 @ 08:20 PM)
Kristin says:

I love every one of these images! Your family is so fun and I just love when we get a glimpse into the life of Clary and company!

Here's my entry for the contest:
The moment my daughter was born, I became a mother. In January she will become a sister, a moment that will make my heart swell with love.

(10.12.09 @ 08:27 PM)
Christine says:

These are just fantastic! I love the "feel" film oozes out! I love seeing photos of your family because they always make my heart smile :)

You are really willing to travel to Chicago for this session? Chicago holds a very dear place in my heart, it's where Danny and I decided to start our lives together during a very cold winter eight years ago. We are now enjoying our 7th year of marriage. How dreamy would a winter session is Chicago be! Here is my submission :)

The twinkling lights streamed down Michigan Ave, enjoying German treats at the Christkindlmarket in Daley Plaza, and I can't forget the yummy, warm pizza! Perfect winter day!

(sorry for the book)

(10.12.09 @ 10:20 PM)
Mel Mac says:

I love all of these pictures and it always makes my heart melt to see you guys. Travis' pic makes me LOL. And I think Jettie is giving Hughes a run for his money in the shutterbug department. Tell my Godson he needs to step up his game, and tell my Goddaughter Good Job!

My Kind of Romantic: Crisp quiet December morning at the break of dawn, our breaths visible against the air, noses red from the cold, playing in the freshly fallen snow with my fiance of 7 months Waiting to enjoy the sunrise, rays striking the snow reflecting its sparkling beauty, in his arms. October 5, 2009

You know those moments that are life changing? When the next day is different than the day before and the world is turned upside down or maybe even spins the other way?

My top 5...

The day I met my best friend, I was four. She was selling girl scout cookies and I got mad because I was a daisy and trying to sell enough to win the top girl scout cookie seller. She lived on my block.

My forth grade teacher who seriously believed in me, even when I couldn't spell state capitols and didn't pay attention in history.

Going to a high school basketball game where Travis sat next to me. He snuck in my favorite candy, Skittles and said my hair smelt pretty. Don't worry, it takes more than this but that was the official start to my world spinning the other way.

First photography critique in college by my favorite professor, now and forever. I photographed a soccer ball with flash. He told me if I ever used flash on another photography project I would fail Photography 101. In fear of not only going to school for a degree my mom thought would take me nowhere, I didn't want to get an F in my first class so I buckled down and didn't pick up a flash for 3 years.

Seeing Jessica Claire's work in 2004, my world turned upside down. I was planning my own wedding and a past bride of Jessica was showing off her pictures, understandably. My jaw dropped, I was changed. 'You mean a young female can be a wedding photographer??!'. Yes, I know today this is not a novel idea but 6 years ago it was. Without this small window into what could be, I wonder how long it would have taken me to realize I could have the best job photographing people in love.

So as destiny would have it the same time I was in California to shoot a wedding, Jessica Claire had a workshop that without question I had to attend. It was an awesome first workshop experience giving me new insight and confirming what I've been doing but the best was the mock wedding set up by the people below. You must check out their work because it is amazing! I'm so excited to show Midwest brides something different and beautiful that is completely obtainable. I loved every square inch, ENJOY!

Some new friends work you can check out from the workshop and my STL photog friends work to see more!!

There is simply too much to blog so I'm letting you decide what's up next. Answer what you would like to see for tomorrows post and your wish will be granted:)

Also let me know what you think of the new watermarking. If you follow me on twitter or facebook you know why I'm having to do this even though I've never enjoyed it, lesson learned. So, let me know, does it take away too much or too big or needs to be darker/lighter?

Thank you:):)

I vote D - that bouquet is amazing. And I really like the watermark. I'd say it could go just a touch more transparent, but only by 5-10% of what it is now. No matter what wins, I always love looking at your photos! It's a win-win situation.

Jessica Claire workshop!! Didn't even notice the watermark until you mentioned it, but I've been staring at a computer screen all day. :)

Napa please!
All of these are amazing! And I definitely want to know where the best places in St. Louis are.
The watermarking looks good from a reader perspective - not too intrusive. BUT it would also unfortunately be easily cropped out in many of the photos. Mean people really do suck.

My vote goes to C - weddings are joyous occasions and this couple definitely glows with joy and happiness. Your watermark if fine, but I would reduce its size to make it more discreet and elegant.
